Hi all,

I've been trying to take care of my mother's garden but I only get home once a month a so for a few days and she is currently only able to do a limited amount of digging.

We typically filled the summer garden with sunflowers, dahlias, and lilies and grew veg. Now, this would be manageable if some of the beds had low-maintenance shrubs or some other space-filler- preferably pretty and not too high!

Is it too demanding to ask for non-demanding plants?
All advice appreciated.

Not at all! There are a lot of low maintenance plants that are available. The key is to make sure the soil type and amount of sun they require fit with what you have. You will also need to look at how big/small they become so you don't get overwhelmed!

Some of my lower-maintenance favorites are: lavender, honeysuckle, asters and ferns.
For the first three- the only real maintenance they require is a little trim at the right time of year to cut off dead growth.
