I didn't know you could plant butternut squash already- must get mine in the ground too!
Did you put cloches around your lettuce seed? |

herself's dad is having a polytunnel delivered tomorrow; so today was spent felling a nondescript evergreen which would have shaded it, chopping it up, mulching the bits which could have been mulched, digging out roots, and rotovating the soil where the polytunnel will go. we threw in two half full compost bins, but given the soil had a lot of roots criss-crossing it from trees (about half of which have been removed, i'm anxious to get some horse manure in too. |

Yesterday I built my 8th raised bed on the allotment and dug/well-rotted manured 3 others.
Planted three short rows of 2nd earlys (queens - they seem to do well in my area). I dug a 6inch trench for the seeds and covered them in rotted horse manure and soil.
Dug out / prepared a new strawberry bed which is about 8ft x 4ft. It's like a raised bed except with no wooden border. I'm going to cover it with weed suppresent fabic and cut slits to plant the strawberries through.
Weeded and removed stones from the edges of my 8 beds in preparation for covering with weed fabric covered by wood chippings. |

I planted strawberries in an old wheelbarrow with drainage holes. It worked well last year, and slugs don't seem to figure out the way up that often. But it looked ugly, so I painted it green, and painted some big daisy flowers on the sides- much better now! |

All potatoes planted today in potato bags placed around the garden. Planted the 3 strongest tomato plants in deep window boxes in greenhouse. Transplanted some of the stronger tomato and cucumber seedlings into larger pots to bring them on. Sowed carrotts in raised bed.
Got rid of any dead or damaged plants around the front and back garden and replaced all shrubs. Sweet pea planted in greenhouse now 6" high already. |

Went to Seapoint Beach Termonfeckin to collect seaweed. Then planted largest cauliflowers and cabbages and covered the raised bed with seaweed.
Sowed more carrotts, lolla rossa lettuce and more scallions. Have the kale sitting out in the fresh air getting ready to plant on Saturday and covered the whole lot with netting to stop the little dog jumping on the bed to investigate.
First lot of lettuce showing already |

a full week has gone by and nothing sown since 27th march Did some digging and weeding. Tidied up compost heap. Salad onions have come overground and I have sown some early Runner beans inside in containers, plum tree in blossom but I think it is a bit early. Gooseberry buds have been damaged by birds so there will be a small crop this year. Rhubarb has finished its first flush and has slowed down. We are approaching the busiest time of the year and time is running on. Must not neglect the forum or I might miss something interesting.

Planted a new strawberry bed with 18 plants (6 elsanta, 6 cambridge, and 6 late croppers).
Planted two more small rows of early spuds.
Planted two blackcurrant bushes.
Setup wind breakers all around my allotment boundary.
Dug over two beds really deeply in preparation for carrot sowing (early nantes & autumn king) and parsnip (gladiator & white gem) sowing later this week.
My first time pulling some rhubarb from plants I installed last year. VERY tasty in a rhubarb crumble yesterday.
Sowed a few more brussels and broccili in seed modules since I had poor germination rates with my original batch. Also, sowed some trailing petunias and a few more broadbeans in trays and modules respectively. |
