can anyone advise. i am only learning and really am a total amateur at gardening, but i am trying to preserve my plants and shrubs.
i have 2 large canariensis plants in the garden, 1 in a container and the largest 1 in the ground.
i was told by my local gardening centre to make sure to protect them in winter from the harsh weather and to wrap when up and make sure to put cloth over the heart at the base of the plant to help it from dying in the minus weather.
well of course i did this and the snow came and went but i noticed in the last few weeks they are going brown like all the leaves are dying.
i have seen this on grasses i have too so maybe this is whats suppose to happen in winter?
today i removed the fleece material i had wrapped around the bases cos i am wondering now if they are water deprieved. am i right in saying they feed down their leaves into the heart? did i dream that?
sorry lots of questions.
these plants were expensive and i dont want them dyding like my yucka last year |

Hi RG
Hummmm its not looking good.
Firstly, its not palms, but tree ferns whose crown should be watered.
The Canary palms are not hardy, and I think I may have lost mine too, even thought I wrapped it up.
My advice is to keep it wrapped - as there are still sever frosts on the way, and if your tree is alive, it will pop out with a fleshy green growing tip in the spring.
The past two winters have been very severe for our semi-hardy and tender friends. _________________ "But no one puts flowers

ah thanks for the reply.
i will be very sad if it dies but i have to say it does look pretty bad.
in fact most of my neighbours have burnt looking spiky trees too.
think i will have to get hardier plants from now on , i really can't afford to replace them yearly.
the largest canariensis cost about 50 euro. and it was absoultley beautiful.
i will re wrap it today and hope for the best. |
