hi there,
I know that this has probably been asked before but i'm new here and not very computer savvy so i was just wondering does anyone know if there are any allotments to rent near portlaoise....I tried allotments.ie and the nearest ones listed are in kildare.... there are some at the old equestrian place in portlaoise but the area is also used for carnivals so not sure if it's the best spot. I have a small garden and so far grow things in pots but I would like to be able to do some real vegetable gardening.
any and all advice greatly apreciated ( :
big thanks

Hi Catnip. My Father-in-law used to approache Neighbours who for various reasons never did anything with there Gardens IE Old age - no Interest - no time etc, before long he had several Plots going in return he would give them fresh Veggies.this worked for many years before Old age forced him to give it up.
Well worth considering,No costs involved,No Travelling and your doing your Neighbours a favour. |

That's a great idea but unfortunately i am living in a bit of a ghost estate, where a lot of houses are rented or empty.....the two houses on my right are empty the past few months and the grass is almost as tall as the fence...reckon i should buy a strimmer and sort it out myself before any little visitors move in!!! the neighbours who are here pretty much keep to themselves cause like me they're all blow-ins from other counties/countries ( ; |

I know the Initial approache is the hardest and People are weary of strangers but you could be in for a pleasant suprise, check out Neighbouring Estates, check with the local "Age Concern" or a similar organization, put an Ad' in local Shops before long you will be cursing me for getting you so many offers.
Those kind of curses I'll take as a compliment, lets know how you get on.
Cheers. Dave. |

geranimojess has the right approach, there are many people old and young who have gardens many of them walled in that are neglected and the owners would be only too willing to rent out the plots in return for some of the produce. getting a bit late for this year but keep on trying.
