Hi all,
I have had a perfect laurel hedge for almost ten years however in the last few years a section of the hedge gradually deteriorated (yellowing leaves turning brown and general failure). Last year I dug out a number and replaced them with similar sized (expensive) plants. These also died and now I notice that afew more of the original plants are failing. The lawn was very wet but I have recently dug a drain about a metre from the hedge. I have been told that the hedge may be infected by a fungus although I dont see any visible signs. Any advise on replanting?

if the ground is wet around the hedge then it is possible that the laurels have died of root suffocation but disease could also be present. If you examine the roots of affected plants and they are black inside then this indicates an infection probably Phythophthora. There is no cure for this disease but if you improve the drainage the survival rate is much greater.
