I've been following a topic on an arborist forum for months, about vegetable oil being used in chainsaws as a more environmentally friendly substitute.

Only a few arborists noted problems, mainly with a few saws that were just left sitting around for months, letting oil in the reservoir age.

The majority who used the vegetable oil, had no problems with it.

One arborist mentioned that Stihl offers a bar / chain oil that is 90% or more, vegetable oil based.
