best bet over the winter is to prepare the plot - what condition is it in? has it been used for allotments before? |

Do you mind my asking- where did you get the allotment? I'm interested in one, but most seem like a long way out- I'm not sure I'd get into the car and drive for an hour to tend my veggies. (County council allotments have long waiting lists)
My advice for what it's worth, is if you have access to rotted manure or compost- spread loads of it on the beds (might be worth making raised beds ahead of time as well if you plan to use them) and the worms will work it in making things easier in Spring. In the small beds I have in my garden, I'm putting in manure, compost and vermicompost as the veggies come out.
If you've to make beds from scratch (from grassland for example) see if you can get someone with a rotovator to go over them after a few days dry weather- then top off up with manure or compost, and a few sheets thick of newspaper or cardboard and cover the beds with water and air permeable weed supressing membrane, pinned or weighted down. Otherwise you'll have alot of weeds/ grass to get rid of in Spring.
Good luck and have fun!! |
