Just wondering what the best surface is for a dog run ? I have the corner done but was planning to use sharp sand instead of gravel to keep the costs down. is this a good idea ? I have the ground on either side sloping downwards to a central drain also.

Dogs love to dig so if you put sand in the run be prepared for the consequences !! Also would it not get matted in their hair. I have my two guys on concrete with a square of grass about 40' by 40' where they play. It works for us Wink

Well the concrete works well for keeping my dogs nails trimmed. Very Happy but like you Foxylock they also have access to a fair sized patch of grass. We used sand as a base at one time but found it irritated the dogs skin. What did you decide to go with iandromiskin?

concrete yes, but not a smooth surface - can go green and slippery or freeze and get slipery. It's quite good if you can put parallel ridges in with a wide toothed rake so that doggy substances run off in the disired direction, and disifectant etc can be swept to where it is supposed to go allong the furrow - ending up in a gutter.
