I came across this as a sugar substitute a couple of months ago while researching various health topics but don't know anything about it. Can it be grown here? How is it used?

Just found this very interesting site all about Stevia, they maintain growing from seed is not a good method????

Here's a recent article suggesting that Stevia may cause health issueshttp://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/stevia-is-sweet-but-is-it-safe/article1333389/ namely " some studies have suggested it can lead to male reproductive problems, interfere with metabolism and cause genetic mutations."

I would sugest you go for Sweet cicely,a good hardy perrenial herb which also act as a sugar substitute for baking

Stevia Rebaudiana HH Perennial Av 40 seeds
Known as Sugar plant, Sweet Herb, Haa Jhee
Stevia grows up to 60cm, its leaves are 2-3cm long. For hundreds of years the leaves have been used in Brazil and Paraguay as a sweetener, now used in many parts of the world the leaves of Stevia are approx 30 times sweeter than sugar with virtually no calories. It has many herbal properties and is used to sweeten medicinal teas and foods, and medicinaly as a diuretic and for obesity, hypertension and help lowering uric acid levels, as a tonic for diabetes, hypertension and high blood pressure. For medicinal purposes seek professional advice in all cases prior to using Stevia Rebaudiana.
