I got a magnolia soulangiana in Lidl on thurs. Its about 60-70cm high. It says on the label best not to prune, but wondering if I could just give it a once off prune, before planting it. I read on this forum somewhere that its good to prune some shrubs back by 1/3 when planting. I'm not even fully sure if magnolia is classed as a tree or a shrub.  |

Follow the label michelle M. 
The 1/3 idea you are thinking of probably relates to hedging stock where pruning at planting time results in a fullness of the hedge.
To be honest most shrubs I plant would not get a right pruning until their 3rd year.

A shrub.

Thanks again,for answering yet another daft question. In general I would follow the label, but some of the plants that I have got in Lidl seem to have instructions that contradict other information that I have read.
If we get the bit of dry weather that is supposed to be coming, I might actually get to sow a few things. |
