I took a notion this evening and decided to have a crack off of making a coldframe, it's something i've always wanted but alas there is always a more pressing outlet for my money. I rounded up some leftover timber and bought some more to add to it, I used plastic as a cover because glass or perspex would blow the meagre budget into smithereens

It's a sort of coldframe on a coldframe !
It needs doors, etc so will post more pics when finished.

Anyway I couldn't put up the pic of finished product because the local genius went hedge cutting and managed to take out an eircom pole !! so no internet, phone or alarm for the last few days

Here it is ready for action final cost works out at about 100 quid give or take and maybe 4 hours labour. It aint the prettiest thing in the yard but hopefully it will serve a purpose.

Where did you get the plastic, what type?

Hi James.

I got the plastic in 4Home, it's just ordinary run of the mill 500 gauge plastic a bit light so I doubled it up for extra strength. The roll cost 15 Euro and the timber is mainly 3x2 pao at 5.10 per 12 foot length.

to make the plastic last longer you could buy UVI plastic available in short lengths and should last 4-5 years. Your double layer will not admit as much light and will become green in between the sheets the structure looks superb and I hope it produces lots of crops for you.
