Planted runner beans last April some have finally reached the top of 8 foot canes, the others are half way up, but all (30) spiral up the cane's from left upwards to right, is this due to the rotation of the earth If so do they grow the opposite way in the southern hemesphere ???

Interesting. But there wouldn't be much of a coriolis effect on runner beans, I think. Perhaps all your runner bean seeds were right-handed?

Best ask in an Aussie gardening forum, I suppose.

And let us know the answer.

Yep!
They're all growing from left to right up the canes, branches, string and each other. White arsed Bumble bees are doing their job this morning also. Very Happy
Kay

It is possibly the sun they follow. I've actually tried to train some the opposite direction for tidyness, they always return to the left - right direction.

You guys have me totally confused with your left to right. Does that mean they spiral upwards clockwise or anti-clockwise. I'l ask that differently. Do they go form left to right at the 'front' of the cane and right to left 'behind' it. I need to know as I always twine my tomatoes anticlockwise and have done since a nipper. Have I been doing it wrong for over half a century?

Left to right around a pole would, I imagine, be anti-clockwise and if so, would be going around in the opposite direction to the sun.

I think someone should ask in an Aussie forum. Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation
