Whilst out on a walk with the kids a couple of autumns ago, my daughter collected leaves and seeds. She asked me to plant her tree seed and I stuck it in a pot, left it down the side of the shed and forgot about it.
Imagine my surprise to find that I now have a young sycamore, about six inches tall and bolding showing it's two new leaves.
Haven't decided what to do with it yet, maybe repot and leave it alone for another couple of years.

Hi Stewart, sycamores are probably the most prolific of self-seeders you're likely to come across. I must have pulled up 500 seedings/saplings in the last six months and have about another 500 to go! They are also as tough as the proverbial old boots so your seedling should thrive regardless what you do with it. I nurtured one in a pot on the patio for years - the new leaves are gorgeous and it gave some height to my display of pots. Keeping it in a pot will limit the size and, unless you have a large garden with no close neighbours I wouldn't advise you to plant it out. It's a great one for kids as the seeds nearly always germinate and it grows quite quickly.

Sorry Stewart! It's always a great buzz to grow anything so how easy or hard actually doesn't matter. Growing stuff is good.
