Hi all, I got all my labeling mixed up back in spring and now I'm struggling to figure out what this beauty is. It's one of the above mentioned in the tittle but which one???

Now that is either a small hand or else a big tomato!
Definitely not Marmande as they have ridges.
Not sure as to which of the other two it is but my money is on Monte Carlo just based on the look of it.

Yeah, they're huge! I'll be picking them off in the next few days, will pop the biggest on scales out of curiosity.
I'm leaning towards Montecarlo myself because Delicious is early variety afaik...

Can you put a coin, matchbox or a measuring tape beside the big ones to give some idea of the scale please. Or is it too late by now?

One more variety - Andine Cornue, fruit is firm and meaty but not very flavorsome.

Also I want to share my tip for those with restricted height greenhouses - I'm gonna use this technique for many years to come Very Happy I encouraged the tomato plants to fall on their side before staking them up, this way it took the plants another month or so before they reached the greenhouse roof.



*ps 1euro coins weights 7.5grams and the scale is zeroed with the coin on it, but it's only a cheap kitchen scale so 1g difference can be expected.

I was in a huge commercial tomato growing greenhouse last week. The plants are grown at 45 deg to gain extra height. The eaves height was about 9 feet so the total stem length would be approx. 13 to 14 feet. The bottom 9 foot of the stem had no leaves at all, just trusses, and plenty of them. The remainder of the plant was leaves only. So there is a variation on your tip.Try that.

If you have too many to eat now then try this..........

There is a little prep work in the recipe below, but nothing too onerous, and its a fantastically versatile and delicious sauce to have in the freezer.

The basic idea is to bake the tomatoes for 45 minutes in a baking tray with a few other bits and pieces and then blitz them into a sauce for freezing.

We use this sauce as a base for pizzas, pastas, stews, casseroles and soups. Its even flavourful enough to be used by itself as a soup.

Heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

Remove the stalks from the tomatoes. You can chop the bigger ones in halves or quarters, but smaller cherry tomatoes can be thrown in whole. Throw them in to a baking tray as you chop.

Roughly chop a medium sized courgette and 2-3 peeled garlic cloves and add them to the tray too. Add a sprig of herbs rosemary and thyme are ideal and a splash of olive oil.

Season really well with lots of sea salt and freshly ground pepper.

Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Use a hand blender to blitz it all down to a sauce consistency.

To save time, I often blitz it right there in the baking tray but it can be a little messy so maybe better to transfer to a saucepan first.

Leave to cool completely and then pour in to Tupperware containers or freezer bags to put in the freezer.

Thanks for your ideas, tagwex. Yes, I've made few jars of sauces flavored with herbs and garlic, will keep them in the fridge and use in next couple of months.

I heard about that exhibition but I wasn't there. It's a bit of a distance for me to travel, I browsed they're photos for some ideas what varieties to grow next year - I'd like to grow all new, never tried ones.

They keep coming with no end in sight. All my neighbors and friends are delighted Very Happy
