Conifers gone, now I am looking to plant shrubs that have colour and hopefully scented, they need to grow to around 5 foot high, I was thinking of Hydrangea but already have put in 4 at the front of my garden , I am also going to get a root chopper, (if thats what they call it) to loosen the earth where the conifers were, and I will put in compost Etc,
when I last asked for hedging many years ago I was taken by pics of a lovely shrub which i went out and bought, I could only get 2 but the following year there were many little plants around them, I potted them and gave some to my daughter and planted the rest where i needed them, they never seeded again and the plants never seeded for my daughter, otherwise I would have got some now, cannot remember the name of the shrub,it looked like a fuchia but the flowers were much bigger, I will have to go over my old posts, hopefully I made a remark on the pics,
so any suggestions on shrubs? hedging?
pics would be lovely

Escallonia. The golden-leaved variety is colourful winter and summer.
