I suppose, on the one hand, this sort of thing doesn't harm anyone, but surely anything that relies on personal taste for its acceptability is just that, and I can't understand why people allow themselves to get sucked into them. E.g. Miss World, Master Chef, Olympic Diving and Gymnastics, Talent Shows. All Bunkum? _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Well a cousin of mine won a prize at Bloom last year and my son's each have several county, provincial and national titles for their musical abilities so I am going to have a different view than you on this one. Judges are there for a reason. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. No problem. Those on the gravy train will obviously endorse its validity but if you a) ask who appoints Person X as a judge or b) why a group of such people will invariably (without consultation) arrive at different conclusions, it's difficult to find an answer? _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

And what is your view when such competitions are 100% a public vote? _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

Yes. Of course it 'works', but only because the average moron likes to be told what's 'a la mode' or 'on trend' but, if I were to ask the staff at my off licence to recommend a 'good' wine, they'd do so but, if I took one sip of it and thought 'Yuc', what value does one put on their recommendation, even if it's won prizes galore. By watching advertising messages, most books are said to be 'best sellers', Cds/DVDs are 'must have', and every food product is 'delicious' or 'tasty' - just to prompt a purchase. _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

People will always have their own opinions.
Wine, well that is down to your personal taste, most likely recommended as it suits most peoples palates but not yours.
Books are bestsellers based on sales. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

As for judging, when we were new to the area we were asked to judge a pet show - NEVER AGAIN!!! _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

Maybe so but I think by word of mouth or personal recommendations or by what a particular author has brought out previously would carry some credence. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I am a big fan of Terry Prattchet's Disc World novels and on the strength of that bought The Long Earth - what a load of codswallop that was! _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth
