Just to explain. They weren't shot dead. Just a certain appendage to ensure that there would be no future generations.

I used to have terrible problems with carrot root fly but since we put in raised beds, hardly one. Also the beds are 18" high but the soil is 2" from the top so the carrots are snuggled down. I grow them with beets on one side and parsley on the other and when I pull them I always cut the tops off away from the carrots so there is no smell to attract the flies.
BTW, I sprinkled on some 'Remin' (ground up volcanic rock) last year. Don't know if it has anything to do with it, but carrots, beets, mangetoute and broad beans have all been brilliant this year - best year ever for carrots and beets. As for carrots being cheap to buy - that's true, but you won't buy sweeter carrots.

Update on the Carrot Net. Bought a net on Ebay from China about 20 quid.
Did the trick , I covered the carrots and Parsnips and no carrot fly but ... the slugs are having a go . The carrot bed is wet , seems to be holding a lot of water, should I dig the carrots for storage ? .

Try salting the little buggers. Or a copper wire around the bed. Eggshells.

Too much salt affects the soil, copper only works well around pots and egg shells are rubbish! You can get pellets that are non toxic to birds and mammals. In the spring a dose of nematodes will keep the little beggars at bay.
I would dig the carrots now and store them in damp peat or sand IN THE DARK - or they start growing again.

But there is pleasure to be had in salting them. I didn't mean to salt the soil but to go out in the evening with a torch and apply directly. Amazing how many you can kill in just 10 minutes.
