Hard to tell from one leaf. If the back of the leaf is a velvety grey, it's a white poplar. Looks very much like mine. Also a little more leathery than a maple

More inclined to agree with the maple then. Perhaps a type of Norway maple? Hard to tell from just one leaf. Tree size, twigs and bark are all clues. Maple leaves (and poplar) can vary greatly even on one tree.

Looks like Acer sp...a maple.
Hard to know the size of that single leaf.
Are the leaves opposite on a twig?
Please can you add a pic to show the whole tree.
Thanks.

Thanks very much Silver surfer. Welcome back. Hope you had a great holiday.
To be honest, this tree is buried in amongst trees and shrubs and I think I will just have to try pull it out .

Holiday excellent thanks Bill...we visited some of the islands in North of Scotland including Orkney.
New pics help thanks.
They show leaves opposite each other on a branch.... so still Acer sp/ Maple.
The leaf stalks are quite long and the lobes a bit rounded.
So maybe Acer campestre...field maple.
Leaf shape can be quite variable.
Hope this helps you decide what to do with it.
