This is Tulipa kaufmanniana commonly known as the water lily tulip.

This bulb grows to approx 20cm (8 inches) in height, therefore catching less wind due to its diminutive stature.
In spite of its height this native of Asia this is actually the parent of many new tulip varieties available today.
The bright red flowers Bloom in March exposing a creamy inside petal with a golden yellow base.
Give the easy to grow Tulipa kaufmanniana a position in full sun whilst providing some shelter, ideal locations include the rock garden and towards the outer edges of wooded areas.
