Gonna' start a new Thread...not to everyones Taste but hopefully it will brighten someones Day specially on these Winter Evenings...
I will be including Native Quotations...sayings and Interviews taken from Journals over the last Century...many of the entries will be light hearted and some not so light but each will convey a message which is relevant in todays World...I'll begin with the following Interview which took place between "Two Eagles" {a Sioux Chief} and a Newspaper Reporter many years ago...
"Reporter"...Chief Two Eagles, your 90 yrs old, you must have seen a lot of changes in your time...you have observed the White Mans progress, his Technology...his Advances and the damage he has caused...
"Two Eagles" nodded in agreement...
The Reporter continued...considering these events, in your Opinion where did the White Man go wrong...
The Chief stared at the Reporter for a few seconds and slowly replied...
When the White Man find our Land and Indians running it, we had...
No Tax'es...
No Debts...
Plenty Buffalo...
Plenty Beaver...
Clean Water...
No Pollution...
Medicine Man {Doctor} no charge...
Women did all the Work...
Indian spend all Day Hunting and Fishing...
All Night making Love...
The Chief leaned back and taking a Smoke from his Pipe, exhaled and added...
"And the White Man was Dumb enough to think He could Improve on that"

My favourite eatery The Happiness Trap, in Enniskillen has a Navajo prayer on the wall - beauty before me, beauty beside me, or words to that effect. It's lovely.
Looking forward to hearing more. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

Sexist to us it maybe but in those times it was a way of Life...each Member of the Tribe had a Job and and it was done without question...while the Man provided and protected his Wife / Family She did likewise in the Home, the way it should be and if that makes me a Sexist...so be it...I haven't heard Jean complaining yet after 45 + years...
I have an "Native Prayer" on my Desk which I read everyday to help me keep my Feet firmly on the ground...
Grant that I may not criticize my Neighbour.
Until I have walked a mile in his Moccasins...
Simple and to the point.......... |

You just cannot beat a hot Jal Ferezi. No water allowed. Sign of weakness. _________________ “It’s my field. It’s my child. I nursed it. I nourished it. I saw to its every want. I dug the rocks out of it with my bare hands and I made a living thing of it!”

On the subject of food (if that's what you can call it!) what did the North American Indians eat? It must have been some good stuff, because you seldom see fat indians in the old photos - unlike now, with the US diet of burgers and coke!
I know the plains indians would have followed migrating bison etc. But did others farm and what did they grow? I'm thinking corn and squashes? Non GM of course. _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth

I've never heard of them farming. I always thought they were hunter gatherers but, for some reason, I don't think the men grew facial hair? It's all a bit sad these days as all the Government conscience money does is allow them to sit and booze all day in the reservations. _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |

Sue...if our diet was half as good as the Native Indian we would not be the Nation of Slobs we are today...
The "Cherokee" mainly dieted on...Turtle-Fish-Venison-Sweet Potato {Yam} and Acorn Bread.......when Travelling long distances "Pemmican" was an Energy Bar made from Berries and Chopped Meat which could be eaten without having to stop...they also hunted Deer-Ducks-Rabbits and other Animals.....Lake / Coastal Tribes mainly ate Fish...
Many Tribes grew their own Crops but the "Cherokee and Navajo" were the Experts...they used Irrigation to bring water to dry Areas and rotated Crops to keep the ground fertile over many years...
Buffalo or Bison was also a big part of their Dietary needs ...not only was the Meat eaten but nearly every other part of the Buffalo had some use...
The Bones...used to make Tools and Weapons...
The Hides....made Clothes-Blankets-Covers for Tepee's...
The Hair........made Ropes...
The Tendons were made into Threads for Sewing...
and finally some Internal Organs were used as Water Carriers...nothing was wasted...
Later on I'll respond to Ado2 and try to show a different side to "Sexism" and why it was never an issue as it is today...
One of my prized possessions is a Knife made with a Hand chipped Obsidian {Volcanic Glass} Blade mounted in a real Coyote Jawbone and secured with Hide Glue and Sinew ... |

Don't know about the turtle but the venison and sweet potato sound yummy! We are having venison and mushroom stew tonight!
I've seen this prayer in several forms. It would be nice to have the definitive version ..... in English! _________________ Be humble, for you are made of earth
