Hi,
Can you help me identify this bogland shrub/tree - it's the only one I have on my boggy plot. It looks at home but I just want to identify it in case it decides to takeover the place.
It's 24in high and appeared in the past few years.
Thanks all
Paton

It's not the only one there, either.

Thanks for your help folks - yes there are multiple saplings there, but just those in the picture. There are only 2 or 3 10 year old Birches on site and they aren't as vigorous as these saplings.
I wanted to figure out what they were in case they can become invasive - the rushes will keep them in check maybe

I looked at them again last evening and the leaf size is definitely much bigger than Downy Birch - the leaf shape however is very similar. Leaf size is perhaps 4cm tip to base.
It is definitely a woody plant!
Any other suggestions?

Cannot see enough detail to be sure.
Can you pick a leaf and feel very carefully the stalk.
Is it round or flat?

Thank you.
Just wanted to rule out Populus tremula...Aspen...which has flattened leaf stalks.
Just leaves Betula sp.
Have a look around for nearby parent tree.
