Any thoughts folks on using mushroom compost to fertilize seed potatoes instead of manure.? For this year only. _________________ It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses we must plant more trees. |

I'd wait to see what others think, but my instinct is that, with spuds being 90% water, mushroom compost SHOULD be perfectly usable as long as the base soil has water regularly capillarising up through it from down below. I seem to recall seeing pictures of spuds being grown under black plastic sheeting at one time with just the helms poking through so, as long as they're kept in the dark and have a water supply, anything that provides those two basic factors ought to be OK. One definite plus point is that, once you've dug your spuds, you should have a nice loamy soil for future crops? _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |
