I think it was a man called O' Callaghan. Might have been a doctor. Was it back in the 1920's? Heard this question before a few years ago at a quiz.

It got the better of me so I had to resort to Mr Google. I wasn't too far off. The reason I remember the name is because a friend of mine has the same name.

not quite; o'callaghan was the first person to win a medal for a sports event.
the first medallist for ireland was jack b.yeats, four years earlier.

O'Callaghans was the first time that the tricolior was raised and the national anthem played.

So did Yeats win for 'Ireland'?

the national anthem was only adopted in 1926, so it not being played in 1924 is probably moot.

At a quiz right now, won it by 5 of course tee hee.
Was it the lad that Tatiana took up with for a while? The name was something unpronounceable!
