I have a Lilac, 9' by 5', which has three main stems. 6 years in the ground from a 10 litre pot. It is crowding other plants. I need to remove two stems, equaling 60%ish of the crown. That's double the recommended maximum reduction for mature trees, and I know that Lilacs hate being pruned. OK, I confess, I put the wrong plant in the wrong place! It's the first Lilac I've ever planted and lived with. I know that if I prune, I can expect a huge growth spurt in height, and no flowers. I'd actually prefer it as a standard. How would you approach this?

If it's in the wrong place, dig it up completely.

If you cut it back to a stump, it'll surely grow again. It's hard to kill plants, I find.
