Margo, as your friend lives in a hot area the flowers on her mystery plant should be open by now.(I think I saw buds)

I am curious to find out what it is.
Do ask for good close up pics.

I believe these are actually hazel nuts.
Corylus maxima.
Ask your friend to look inside the red papery covering for the nuts.

Margo..please can you suggest that your friend joins these forums.
It would be a lot easier to have her post her own pics./answer her directly.

Still awaiting further pics of the mystery plant from earlier on.

Mirabilis jalapa. That would fit.
