is it too late to divide a fern? we have one growing right beside the path at our front door, and it's getting quite large, and gets in the way later in the year; the fronds started to unfurl in the last week or two though.
not sure what it is, but it looks like a male fern. it grows to over 3 feet across i would guess. the previous owner told us it self-seeded there.

It should be ok if you do it right away. Find it a place with conditions it will like and consider reducing it in size - just as you would divide any perennial. Keep it well watered and maybe shelter it from the wind until it settles into its new site.

the big question for me is where to plant the various parts - i reckon it'd split in 3 for me.
