Two prizes for Balbriggan and one for Skerries made for a very successful Allotment Awards event for North County Dublin towns.

Celebrating the best allotments in Ireland, these annual awards were presented at a ceremony in the RDS last week. Best new entry went to Barbara Doyle from Balbriggan, who only started her allotment six months ago and yet her progress has been in the words of the judges ‘exceptional and an example to all’.

Latvian native, Laima Ruka was judged to be the third best allotment gardener for her County Council plot in Skerries. Her allotment was not only abundant with fruit and vegetables, but judges noted that she found it a great way to meet people and de-stress – one of the many benefits of allotments that judges were also looking out for.
