We have two small areas of amenity grass outside our house. They don't belong to us, but we are expected to cut them at our own expense, and have to dispose of the clippings. I refuse to do "cut and drop" as that would make the bugger grow quicker. We are also expected to give money to a guy who cuts other bits of grass well away from our house, which we are now refusing to do, as we can't afford it.
Some of it has spring bulbs planted in it. I also planted a Liquidambar styracflua, a Damson, and two blackcurrant bushes. Next year, we plan to only cut the grass twice, and manage it as a meadow. What would be the best (and cheapest) seed mix to oversow with, and when would I do this? There is already, selfheal, yarrow, corn poppy, cuckooflower, and speedwell present. We MIGHT be able to buy plugs, but if so, where from?
The aims are to make it look pretty, minimize mowing hassle and expense, and provide good insect habitat. |
