Sowed some in the spring, and they are huge, and ready to eat now before they go woody. I know the leftover seed won't have a great germination rate next year. I can sow in open ground, and in my polytunnel. Is it worth a go, even though the books say it's too late?

Well I sowed them late too, (June 9th) sure isn't everything I do late? But what I did find was that it took them 6 weeks to germinate. Only started to appear last week. So yours will only appear mid September, will the ground have enough heat to support them? I would go with the polytunnel.
I passed through your village last Sunday, only thought of it a good few miles further down the road.

I suspect it might be too late as they can be slow to germinate and will not put on sufficient growth, parsnips are usually best eaten after first frost which should be in approx 12 weeks if i'm right.
