Wild poppy seeds, can they be used for human consumption?
You know, on the likes of bread etc.
Does anyone know or have experience using them in cooking/baking?
I saved the seed pods from last years plants, and have another glut of them growing. T'would be good to have varying uses for them. |

NO! They will cause severe stomach ache. The poppy seeds used in baking are from Papaver somniferum aka the opium poppy. |

Wow, and with me being a have-a-go type eater, I'd no doubt have tried them at some point. Thanks tippben! |

random trivia - many prison officers in the US are contractually forbidden from consuming poppy seeds, as it messes with the drugs tests they have to periodically take. |

I've grown them for flower and seed. The seeds are obviously not illegal, and are readily available. Cultivation technically is, but at our latitude they don't produce any narcotic content anyway. Nobody ever commented on them, and if, perchance, somebody in a uniform knocked on the door, I would've plead ignorance. They do look very similar to P. orientalis, sold in garden centres. |
