Would I be made to plant one of these in my front garden? There is one in a park nearby and the scent and flowers are beautiful. From what I have read they can spread and try to take over, but would it be possible to keep one to a decent size by regular pruning?

roses in general are not invasive, But Rosa rugosa is a native of Asia they are tolerant of cold weather and resistant to pests.Pruning depends on how large you want them, you can prune them to ground level in spring or just remove old wood and suckers.
If you want a large rose just prune the top 6 inches each spring.
