I first came across this tip in, I think, Irish Garden magazine or it might have been Gardeners World mag - anyway, it was ages ago:
To destroy weeds with deep taproots that are located in sensitive areas or where you don't want to use glyphosate, simply put about a teaspoonful of table salt onto the centre of the plant, cover with a stone or some such to keep the rain off, and wait. In a week or ten days the weed will be DEAD. Sometimes I have used a second dose of salt if the plant was well established, to make sure.
The photos show 'before' and 'after' of two dandelions, one in the middle of my oregano and the other in amongst some London Pride. No surrounding plant was damaged.
