Does this look like damage caused by thrips? I've had this Fatsia Japonica for years and never had bother with it until last year when it was devastated by, I think, thrips. The climbing roses nearby were badly affected too. I treated them with a pyrethrum-based spray which seemed to do the trick at the time.
Now they seem to be back in action again, even though it is still quite cold.
Any suggestions, anyone?

I had the exactly the same on a Fatsia Japonica last year. I sprayed the underside of the leaves with water mixed with washing up liquid regularly, and cut away the very bad leaves.

Don't know if the treatment worked or did the pests just go away but it recovered eventually and looks great this year.
