well, I would leave them in the ground until the stalks die down in late summer. Some people fold over the green stalks earlier on as this encourages closing of the centre of the bulb ...which can often be the first place to rot....
I generally pull the onions once withered and then leave them outside to air dry for a few days..can leave them on an old pallet if you have one.
Then bring them inside and store in a cool, dark, well aired place. Would keep an eye on them from time to time as usually the odd one will start to rot and is best removed for the stew that evening...
Anyway, not saying its the best way but thats what I do with my onions...
Another thing I heard was to remove the outside layer(s) of loose skin before you store them as this is supposed to help remove any last bit of moisture that might start the rotting process...and it makes the onions look much tidier....
Hope your onions do well this year, mine are growing well...compared with last year.... |
