During a gardening natter with a mate of mine this morning, he told me of a bit of advice he'd received from an old timer.
CLUB ROOT - This old chap claimed to have never had a case of club root because, when planting out seedlings, he dibs his hole as normal but, before dropping the plant in, he drops in an inch of rhubarb stem. In my six years I haven't suffered the disease (famous last words) but if it helps someone else ...........
COUCH GRASS - He also claims that, whenever he has a largeish quantity of couch grass roots that he's cleared out of his ground, he puts them in a black plastic bag with water and seals the top. After several weeks, when the mass has had time to ferment, the liquid makes a good fertiliser. [/b] _________________ A novice gardener on newly cultivated, stoney ground. |
