Hi folks, im new to the forum, so hello to everyone.

I was just wondering, does anyone find it way too cold lately to begin to sow anything. i still havnt got my first drill of early potatoes down yet, which were meant to go down on st patricks day, but it was a complete wash out (im in the midlands). anyhow, all i have in the ground are some onion sets from a few weeks ago, i have been holding off on carrots, radishes and beetroot until the weather warms a little. Is anybody else holding out for better weather or have you everything sowed, im curious to know.

i'm holding out on planting anything from seed out side yet, no point but i have some things planted inside so i wont get slowed down.

Hi allotment man. I have a few things started inside but that's all. I'll be sowing some onions this weekend but holding off on everything else for a few more weeks. We've had more frost and snow the last few days so it's just too cold.

Im glad to see other are holding off also. I am eager to get the start of the spuds down though. Im just looking out the window now, snowing in Laois at the moment. Hopefuly within the next week it may pick up a bit. Im going to use this time to build more beds though on the allotment and get more things sorted.

My soil temperature was a fraction below zero 10 days ago. That was before the current cold snap.
For most veg you need the temperature around 7`C.

Unless the vegetables are very cold tolerant I wouldn't bother until the soil heats up. They're not going to grow and you're just extending their exposure to pests and diseases.

yes it's way too cold for sowing ANYTHING.
I unfortunately laid my onion sets down 3 weeks ago, and have been trying to make sure they haven't been standing with their feet in snow and frost since, as this will surely result in a lot of bolting later on. You can just about swing it with onion sets, but don't consider a single seed of anything else. My Sharpe's Express are well chitted but are still waiting to be drilled, and hopefully we'll get them to bed this weekend, he says looking over his shoulder through his office window and it absolutely pelting snow in Dublin at present...

i might hopefully get my spuds in aswell this weekend. A colleague in work today told me something interesting. that my early spuds can still be sowed in april along with my late spuds (rooster, records, golden wonders), but my home guard earlies will still come earlier then the other. i always just presumed earlys had to be drilled early??????

anyways, i start my easter holidays today so im going to spend a few hours making more beds today.

Good to know. I'm itching to get going though. Filled a few pots today with good soil and compost. Sowed rocket and lettuce. If they come up well and good. If they don't, well it's not the end of the world.

I planted out my early potatoes today, put a sheet of perspex over the top to try and warm them up/ keep them warm.

Also planted out the onions that I've had in trays of compost in the greenhouse. Covered them with fleece to give them some help too.

Planted out 2 cherry trees which I'm going to try and train into a fan against the fence and added a gooseberry and blackberry bush in gaps. Have another one of each of those to put in, but that's a job for another day.

I planted out some onions in the polytunnel today, the weather has been much better the last few days.
