I did. But I never said how much. It was when you said its cheaper to make your own than buy one that got me thinking.

I would say if you do not try / cost the parts required, then yes, making your own bio filter sounds a good idea, and should be cheaper. But I found the opposite to be the case, its cheaper to buy one than make one.
So my question still stands.
How much does yours cost, and that must be including all parts (not everyone has "some stuff laying around")
Below is what I found
Bio filter cost £33 (we need something to compare to.)
Water tank cost £10
Lid for tank cost £7
Filter sponges cost £10
Filter media cost £10
So far you would have spent £37 and still have to spend more to get hose tails and internal pipe work. So it seems that to make your own is not cheaper.

It is too early to tell how well the filter is working. It wasn't in use until August and by rhen most of the algae growth had stopped. May and June next year will be a better test and by then I should have a lot more oxygenating plants growing in the middle pond.
On a large scale the skippy is less expensive but also the filter doesn't need to be cleaned because water can flow through the loose filter media quite easily. The only thing is that it won't do much physical filtering of the water but the biological treatment is the more important function.

Is there any difference between two systems.
one with the outlet(s) at the bottom and the inlet at the top (spray system)
and
one with the outlet(s) at the top and the inlet at the bottom?
Just wondering.
