There are a lot of variables which effect longitivity of a plant.
This genus belongs to the mallow family which also contains hollyhocks and hibiscus. The 25 species of Lavatera are mostly native to the Mediterranean. The species name, maritima suggests its origins in the coastal or maritime regions of North Africa. if its growing in Irelannd enough said weather forces it to produce seed and cold kills it i its native country it would have adapted to growing there and specific insects would live on it etc...
Here Nada, cold, not required by any other insects, soil organisms etc etc......

I have a 5-yr-old Lavatera, which blooms wonderfully each year. It looked miserable after our BIg Freeze of 2010-2011 and I was certain it was dead, and yes, parts of it were, but it put out fresh growth and now looks as good as ever. More Lazarus than Lavatera !
I wonder how many more years it will survive ?
