Hello there, I hope you are well. I wanted to mention the problem of ticks in Ireland which can transmit a horrifc illness called Lyme Disease. Lyme diagnosed in its initial stages can be a mild, self limiting disease but if left to progress in the body it can create havoc with organs, joints, muscles, eyes, even the brain. If anyone who enjoys gardening spots a tick we have a survey which will help us track where ticks are being found. More details of the survey plus the most recent results can be found at: http://ticktalkireland.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/latest-survey-results-ireland/
We have a conference coming up in June which will cover protection & prevention tips, tick-borne infections in humans & animals plus presentations from lyme experts & scientists. More details on dates of the event plus speakers & agenda can be found at: http://www.ticktalkireland.org/lymeconference.html
May is International lyme awarenss month. if anyone would like to help us raise awarenss on your area feel free to contact us. A sponsored walk is being planned in the Wicklow mountains for any hiKers amongst you (a minimum of 6 people are needed for us to go ahead as we'll be paying for a mountain guide to lead the walk!)
Than you so much for your kind attention. For contact details go to: http://www.ticktalkireland.org/contact.php
Remember, a Tick in Time Saves Lyme!
(prompt removal decreases your chances of infection...)
With very best wishes,
Jenny O'Dea
