Verbascum “Gainsborough” facts and information.
The mullein has traditionally been used in medicines to treat skin and respiratory ailments.
It is a frost hardy perennial growing to approx 1.2 metres (4 ft) in height; with a spread of approx 30cm (1ft).
This native of Europe and Asia sports sulphur yellow flowers during late summer on many branched flower spikes above greyish green down covered leaves.
Its old style cottage garden looks make it ideal for mid planting in today’s informal beds and borders, as long as the soil is free draining and not too rich (Verbascums will not tolerate wet winter soil).
One complaint the many gardeners have is that Verbascum “Gainsborough” plants can be very short lived, often living only two years, well that’s all the more reason to take those root cuttings folks.
