Hi
I have built a raised bed at the bottom of my lawn with a structure that archs onto my shed.i planted two honeysuckle any celmatis last year to grow up over it here are my problems- the bed is about a foot deep at the front an foot an a half at the back I filled it with a mix of soil some grit and compost. I dug one side back up today were the honeysuckle didnt seem to be doing much an found under about a foot down at the front the ground is full of stones, heavy clay an very compact same in the whole bed I done a drainage test an it doesn't seem to be getting away I know it has been raining but I think it's not good is this a problem? also the one that was not doing good got invested with what were like small green fly at the young flower buds an stopped them forming right I checked them last week an the blighters are there again one last think how much should the honeysuckle grow yearly any help would be great thanks

Hello Owen.

I think you should dig out those rocks and dig over the soil again to remove that compacted layer.

Climbers require deep soil and most don't like to sit in damp soil conditions

Honeysuckles are fast growing climbers and can put on 2 ft of growth in a year. But your plants need time to establish a good root system before they will achieve such heights.

Regarding your greenfly problem; prepare a water and soap solution and squirt it onto your plants, especially the under side of the leaves. The greenfly should fall straight off
