Thought you might be interested in this, Ponddigger. It was built about ten years ago in a lake on a mountain on Arranmore Island, Donegal. It commemorates the links between Arranmore and Beaver Island on Lake Michigan, where a lot of Arranmore exiles settled.

What a brilliant idea! Isn't it wonderful what determined people can do? Also, how sponsors will row in when given a chance. I will definitely go and see this - I have friends who now live not too far away. I'll bring a piece of my own Donegal quartzite with me.
Thanks so much for sending me the link. The blog makes very touching reading - I will forward it to my emigrant sister in Alberta.
I attach two pics of the only stonework project of any size that I've been involved in. A few years ago I was approached by the local branch of An Taisce to help with a Butterfly Garden project. The site is beside the Tourist Office on the outskirts of Letterkenny and it was very open and windswept. I designed a layout for them, for the hard landscaping, including a substantial drystone wall which was to provide shelter and a 'storage heater' effect, as well as being an effective wildlife habitat. It was built using a FAS scheme, with stone taken from an abandoned house up in Glenswilly. It has worked quite well, I think.

Fascinating photos of the arch construction process. I am always interested in how bridges are built - they seem to present new engineering challenges through the ages. One of the last jobs my dad did before he retired was Site Engineer on a bridge on the Enniskillen to Dublin road and he often spoke to me of the challenges involved in putting a complex design into practice in the real world. I guess it was always so.

Have to agree with you there Good Guy. I have been resident engineer on several bridges, rail and road, both here and in the UK. The logistics, especially on rail or live motorways, have to be seen to be believed. And yes, it doesn't get any easier. Currently working on a new power station and what goes on there has to be seen to be believed. In almost 30 years I have never seen a construction site so badly organised.

Frustrating doesn't come close - there are times that I just want to scream, trying to get anything done is just a nightmare what with so many co-workers, machinery, plant and materials all in the way, constantly. No wonder the programme is currently three months behind.
