Anyone ever grow oats?
They are on sale at irishseedsavers.
If so, when does one plant.
I know its a fairly hardy crop - but does it need full sun.
Any particular fertilizer?
I think home grown Irish oats could possibly make for good Tabbouleh recipe
Also - does anyone know where I could find duram wheat seed to make bulgar? _________________ My Garden blog

If I were you, I'd give seedsavers a ring and ask. They are very knowledgable and helpful, and will be familiar with the variety that they are selling. I'd add a couple of weeks onto the sowing date they give you, given that they are in East Clare, and you are in Connemara. Oats are basically a grass, so should grow well in a fine tilth, close sown, with plenty of water at flowering time. I'd be more worried about harvesting and storing them without them going mouldy. You'd have to watch for ergot fungus on the ears as well, which can be very dangerous if eaten. |
