Hi Guys,

I'm a brand new gardener so sorry for this question if the answer is obvious... but I'm a little confused. I was hoping someone could please advise me. I planted a lot of bits and peices (lilys, bizzy lizzy, regular bedding plants etc etc ) but I see that now there is something cropping up that I have no idea if its a flower (that I planted and forgot about...) or if this is a weed. I've attached some images of this & I'm hoping that you can help. They are crowding my patch (as I've only got a small space in the front of the house) & its beginning to bother me - if there weeds I just want to get rid of them but a few people are saying that they're flowers... anyway, I'll let you guys be the judge of this. Can anyone help?

the plant or weed is either Jewel weed (impatiens) or Hedge Woundworth (Stachys Sylvestris) which has a distinctive unpleasant smell and a square stem.

Looks more like Marsh Woundwort, Stachys palustris.
Slightly paler flowers than Hedge Woundwort and not quite such a pungent smell.

it's a cliche, but... a weed is simply a plant you don't want. if you like the look of these plants, they cease to become weeds*.

*warning: plants may be invasive.

Wink Marsh Woundwort is a 'spreader' - years back I left it growing in my veg patch as I liked the flowers and it didn't know when to stop!

Thanks to all who replied. Well... after much thought, I decided that these were in fact weeds & I've gotten rid of them. They were taking up too much space & I felt that they were also over shadowing the other flowers. I'm happy now with how it looks without these - so thanks again!!
