Hi guys,

My dad planted this tree from a slip about 25 years ago. It's now about pretty large, say 3 meters. Does anyone know what it is?

Also, the fact that the bark is broken in places, is that something I should worry about.

My camera batteries were dead, so I had to use my phone. Sorry about the photo quality.

Many thanks.

Looks like a variegated form of our native Irish Elder / Elderberry.
See here......... Native Irish Elder / Elderberry.
Possibly Sambucus nigra 'Madonna'..........

That's magic James, thanks!

I got this from the google link you posted.

Quote:
Madonna Elder is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth

I can confirm that its new shoots do tend to grow vertically upwards.

Quote:
Madonna Elder will grow to be about 10 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 8 feet. It tends to be leggy, with a typical clearance of 2 feet from the ground, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

30 years ... so it could be coming to the end of its life? It has been looking rather raggy for the past couple of years, which is a pity as it is one of my favourite plants in the garden.
