With Easter weekend I got to spend a great bit of time working on everything that's coming to life in my polytunnel. Weeding between the rows of onions, checking the lettuce, planting the first few tomato plants, earthing up around the garlic, planting out a few different seedlings, making up hanging baskets, sowing some seeds....
...and then....
...discovering in the space of five minutes, a vine weevil grub, three slugs (one was surprisingly orange by the way!), the usual trove of spiders, and some variance of millipede or centipede...not sure but had a hell of a lot of legs
I've tried to keep things organic in the tunnel, and so have not used any pesticides etc. but am concerned specifically about the slugs as some early lettuce is growing wonderfully ad I'd hate to see it destroyed.
A few questions:
1. Anything I can do about slugs?
2. Are millipedes/centipedes a probelm I should be concerned about?
3. Is there anything that can be done about vine wevils? Other than the obvious kill on sight.
Thanks as always! |
