I'm collecting my seeds from ebay to start planting and using the one size fits all method. That is, not distinguishing between those which are annuals, perennials, need stratification (a cold period between germination). So, I have to work the soil, mark the "do not disturb" areas and start putting in. Not being a native, I'd appreciate advice on what is the earliest I can put in seeds to be safe from frost. I've been reading the blogs of zone 9 areas for what the pros are doing. Many are starting seeds in jugs or glass frames which I find more work than I can manage, given that one has to monitor the sun, humidity, wet etc. And to minimize the losses, I'd want my seeds to take the long time, at your own readiness, you die, well...

In summary, when is last frost date and the soil ready to at least put in a spade? I know it will be cold soil for a long time until the sun starts to shine.

Have you noticed the days getting longer yet by the movement of the sun, setting and rising? Have you smelled spring in the air yet?
