Hi All,

I am beginner gardener moving into second-hand house in the countryside with about a 1/2 an acre of over-grown and potentially very wet land.

I have bought a few gardening books to read but few seem to provide the macro-view that I would need to plan a garden. I have heard that Geoff Hamilton's books (Practical Gardening) are good from a friend who is trained in horticulture. I am interested in getting a book that will help with the overall landscape look of the garden i.e. what I would need to do to drain the ground, level the garden (it's a bit bumpy), where to plant trees & hedges, where is the best place to grow vegetables, where to have a wild area, etc.

I wonder what are the Forum's contributor's experiences with different gardening books?

All the best,

AB

Hello Absolutebeginner.
I found the RHS book "Garden Planning" to be brilliant.
You may be able to check it up online by putting in the ISBN number.
ISBN 1-84000-160-7
You will find it in easons as well as thats where I got it.
Good luck

Thanks Verge; I will check it out. I picked up the Geoff Hamilton book that I mentioned in an earlier post in a second hand bookshop recently. I have found it excellent. It is very readable, great photos and the man's enthusiasm and love for gardening is infectious.
