2 years ago we planted bare root laurel hedging, which has done brilliantly, and on my way into work, I have spotted one in particular that has suffered from the recent bad weather but ours is thriving, The laurel was bare root and about 2-3 foot, and has been cut back to encourage bushiness. It is now about 6 foot and doing really well. We planted silver birch intermittently in between.

There is one particualr beech border hedge on my way to work which is beautiful all year round with mixed trees planted through it.

Either way you wont go wrong with either

Just an update with some pictures taken in May and August. I decided to go with the mixed hedge. Delighted with it now.

That looks great already, well done....in a year or two it will have changed the entire feel of your garden....for the better....and it will fit beautifully into the rural setting.
And the bonus will be ever-increasing wildlife too as the insects and birds move in.
I'm so glad you're pleased with your decision.

Was thinking of putting down a layer of farmyard dung under hedges for the winter. I know they won't grow over the winter but hope it would be a boost when spring arrives. Was going to put under apple trees also. Anyone know of any reason not to do this??
