How do I add an avatar / profile picture to my profile?

An avatar / profile picture is the image that appears at the top of each of your posts and on your profile page.
It can be a humorous reflection of your personality, and is also your face to others on Irish gardeners.
Look to the left of this post or visit my profile page to see my avatar / profile picture.

There are two ways to find avatars / profile pictures

1. Choose an avatar from a site offering free avatars.
There are numerous sites that offer free avatars / profile pictures for you to use on this site. Here are a few links:

2. Create a custom avatar from an image of your own.
Ok, this is slightly trickier depending on your skill level but it allows you to upload any image you can get your hands on.
Find an image you like and using a photo editing application such as photoshop or paint to resize the image to no greater then 128 x 128 pixels and a file size of no greater than 7 Kb

If you have picked out an avatar on another site first download and save it to your computer.
If you created an avatar yourself it will already sit in a folder on your computer so no need to download it.

Next visit your "My Profile" page (the page where you can edit details about your profile, you must be logged in to view it) and go to the part of the page that says "Upload Avatar from your machine:".
Beside it you will see a box and a button that says "Browse".
Click the "Browse" button and find and choose the avatar image that you have downloaded or created.
Once you have chosen it simply click the "Submit" button on your "My Profile" page and your avatar should be uploaded and ready to go!

If you recieve an error message when trying to save your new avatar this is most likely happening because the avatar is too big.
The file size may also be too large.
All avatars uploaded to this site must be a maximum size of 128 x 128 pixels and have a file size of no greater than 7 Kb.

By following the steps mentioned above you can change your avatar as often as you want.
